Happy Feelings of Christmas Nostalgia, Totally Rad Christmas

During the lead up to Christmas, I decided to show y’all some Christmas podcasts that you can listen to when you need a break from all of the Christmas music that seems to be on repeat this time of year. This week, I get to talk about the podcast, Totally Rad Christmas. This podcast talks about all things Christmas in the eighties and has the best feelings of Christmas nostalgia.

This is how Jerry D describes the show, Totally Rad Christmas. It’s a show about the raddest time of the year in the baddest decade ever. That’s right, we talk all things Christmas in the 80s. Toys, movies, specials, music, books, games, comics, decoration, food, fashion, and fads. If it was gnarly during Christmas in the 80s, we got it covered. Each episode is around an hour long.

Podcast Coaching

So you’ve started your podcast. That’s an amazing accomplishment. Good for you. But now you’re realizing that it could be so much better. One way you can improve your show is by scouring YouTube, Pinterest, and Google for podcast tips and tricks.

The more streamlined and personalized way to do it is to join my program, The Sounding Board. It’s a small group coaching program starting in January, where I’ll spend six weeks teaching you how to take your podcast from a decent long term marketing strategy to an amazing way for you to find new clients and keep the ones you already have.

You’ll be learning with a group of motivated podcasters. We’ll have an exclusive Voxer group where you can ask questions specific for your show and get feedback from the group on intros, outros and everything in between. The sounding board will take your podcast from eh, to excellent in six short weeks.

Doors open for the early bird pricing of The Sounding Board on December 11th. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected] or hop on over to Instagram and send me a DM at FriendlyPodcastGuide. I can’t wait to help you make your podcast the best it can be.

Two Favorites in One

I’m Jerry Dee and I am the host of the Totally Rad Christmas podcast. I work at a Christmas store, so you can tell I really do like Christmas. It is the largest Christmas store in Texas. I am a father of three. My oldest is 11, she’s actually in sixth grade now. Then I have a six and a four year old. It’s fun, entertaining and it’s very much full house sometimes when it comes to their dynamic. I have been married for 12 years now, it is a good time here.

Totally Rad Christmas is all about Christmas and it’s all about the eighties. Those are two of my favorite things in the whole wide world.  I was a kid in the eighties so that’s when Christmas was the most magical and wonderful to me. Even though both of my parents were teachers and didn’t make a whole lot back in the eighties, they always tried to make Christmas the most special. They would save and save and for the presents that they could buy me. Then luckily, of course, Santa would come and bring me something pretty cool as well.

Christmas was one of those things that I always loved. The eighties were also a time I always loved. I was a guest on another podcast, called Tis A Podcast. Afterwards, one of their listeners reached out to me and told me I should have my own show. I thought about it and decided to put my two loves, the eighties and Christmas together. That is how I created Totally Rad Christmas!

Feelings of Christmas Nostalgia

The whole point of my show is to make people, especially of my generation, think back to those days and just get that feeling that they might not have gotten in a long time. I loved Christmas so much in the 80s. I remember that feeling of waking up Christmas morning and running to the tree and seeing all the presents and the lights under it. There were lights on the tree, a glow, and this beautiful warmth, magic, awe and wonder. That feeling is hard to replicate when you’re an adult. Thinking about those days really brings it back.

Sometimes it might be like, Hey, remember this He Man and She Ra Christmas special? Or, remember Cabbage Patch Kids? It doesn’t matter. On the podcast we’ll cover anything as long as it has to do with Christmas and 80s.  I’ve had a lot of feedback from people sharing, I remember that, after listening. It brings back fantastic feelings. That’s my whole goal, to bring that wonder and just sense of magic back to the season.

I always try to be positive and try not to bad mouth anything, even if I don’t really like it. I’ll try not to be too harsh on things because someone out there is going to love it. The thing about the 80’s is that it was the wild west out there. They threw everything at the wall to see what stuck. Some of it stuck and a lot of it didn’t, but the fact that they tried is kind of amazing. I always try to be fun, upbeat, and entertaining. Overall we really enjoy having fun with these things and basking in those memories.

Fun and Conversational

Totally Rad Christmas is very conversational. My first two seasons, it was us back and forth talking. There are these three bits that I do at the end just for laughs.

We’ll do a bit where I ask them about their happiest memory which is taken from Christmas Vacation. I do a bit called gag me with a spoon, the phrase from the 80s. In this bit we do our best impression of our least favorite part of the thing that we’re covering. For example, it could be a really boring line or scene. It could be a character’s voice that you really didn’t dig. Whatever it is, we try to do our best impression of it. I used to have folks vote on it, but I decided to forget it because I was losing every single time.

We also try to guess things. Since G. I. Joe taught us that knowing is half the battle. We always try to guess what the other half of the battle is and we relate it to the show. It’s a jolly good time and it’s pretty chill. We’re really relaxed and it’s a nice laid back atmosphere. We dig into whatever we’re talking about and it’s fun.

I have a lot of Christmas podcast network hosts come on.  I also try to have other hosts from other shows like, Cult Film Club or No More Late Fees. These popular or semi popular shows among us geeky folks. We have fun with it and  it’s just a blast.

Totally Rad Christmas Social Media

Our website is totallyradchristmas.com. You can pretty much find everything from there. I also have a linktree, https://linktr.ee/totallyradchristmas. From there you can get to my Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, Mastodon and Blue Sky. I have a Facebook group called the Totally Rad Christmas Mall and Arcade. Anyone that’s a member can post anything they want about the 80s or Christmas.

Episodes to Start With

Every year I do a fake awards show called the Totally Rad Christmas Awards, or the Raddies. Any one of those episodes are fun, we have the Inaugural Raddies, the Second Annual Raddies, and the Third Annual Raddies. There’s usually some sort of theme or fun little bit.  I don’t want to spoil it, but some examples are the nominees for Raddest Christmas, or Raddest TV show episode. I’ll have clips and there will be music in the background just like an award show.  There’s clips of the different episodes so you can get a feel for all the different guests. Those are really good but I think some of my favorite episodes.

The planes, trains and automobiles one is very good. I really enjoyed the Andy Williams and the NBC Kids Search for Santa episode because it’s just bonkers. McDonald’s is a really good one too.

Family Friendly Podcast

It’s mostly okay for little ears. Most of the episodes are and there’s a few that I’ve labeled as explicit. Occasionally the subject matter is a little more adult and you can tell by the title. If we’re talking about Invasion USA, it’s probably best to listen to that one with the headphone in or as you’re driving to get groceries or something. That’s one you might want to avoid but then some of the ones like the Care Bears one is definitely okay for little kids. The Pound Puppies episode is amazing.  I try to make sure my guests don’t curse or use profanity in any way but occasionally one might escape if they’re saying something is “bad a”. You know what I mean? If it was just an 80s podcast, I wouldn’t care, but because it’s Christmas in the 80s, I feel like it needs to be a little cleaner.

All Types of Christmas Nostalgia

We cover anything in the 80s. It doesn’t matter if it’s TV specials, movies, episodes of shows, or music. We do cover a lot of music and I do get a little bit into the weeds with music theory because I’m a musician.  I love music theory but I try to keep it a little bit grounded. We talk about toys, fashion, food, decorations and there’s a bunch of miscellaneous things as well. If you’re into anything  in the eighties, like if you love stranger things and it reminds you of when you were growing up, you can tune into my show. We will probably have something that you remember or that sparks something in the recesses of your mind.
