Being on a podcast is a great way to get yourself, your ideas and products, in front of a new audience, but being on a podcast can be daunting. As the Friendly Podcast Guide I often get asked questions about how to be a guest on a podcast so I decided it’s time to put all of my tips in one spot. These tips will help you get podcasts hosts to say yes when you ask to be on their shows as well as make the most of the platform you are given while being on a podcast. And as a bonus, when you are a great podcast guest the host will tell their podcast friends about how wonderful you are and you will start having podcast hosts ask YOU to be on their shows!

10 Tips on Being a Great Podcast Guest

So here are 10 tips for how to be a great podcast guest:

  1. When choosing a podcast to be a guest on, make sure that your message will go with the theme of the podcast. For example if you have a product that helps moms with young children, you probably don’t want to be trying to get on a giant monster movie podcast.
  2. Make sure you have listened to at least one episode of the podcast you are wanting to be on. Podcast hosts can tell when you have taken the time to get to know their show and their podcast style.
  3. When you ask to be on a show give the podcast host a couple of different topics that you can discuss on their show along with two or three well thought out talking points that you would touch on during the interview.
  4. After the host has agreed to have you on their show finalize what topic you will be discussing during the interview so that you can be prepared to bring your A-game.
  5. Before the actual interview practice speaking about your talking points and if the interview is going to be virtual, practice getting on Zoom, Skype or whatever platform the podcast host is using, to make sure you know exactly how to get on and what to do during the interview.
  6. If the interview is over Zoom or Skype, make sure you use a microphone (even if it’s just the microphone in your headphones) and headphones, it makes your sound quality significantly better, which in turn makes you sound much more professional and put together.
  7. During the interview make sure to be in a spot where you won’t be disturbed, with minimal noise, so that you can focus all of your attention on the podcast host and the interview.
  8. Once the interview is concluded follow up with an email to the host with any links that you mentioned in the interview so that the host can direct people to the places you would like their listeners to go.
  9. When the episode comes out make sure to share it with your community, on your social media or your email list or both!
  10. Remember that just like everything in life, being a great podcast guest takes practice, you won’t be perfect the first time you do it and that is to be expected! Just keep practicing and you’ll be a pro before you know it.
