Get Excited for St. Patrick’s Day with These Irish Podcasts

As we dive headfirst into March, I wanted to give y’all a list of Irish podcasts that you can listen to while you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year. Doing the research for this episode was super fun because I absolutely love listening to Irish people’s accents.

Talking Derry Girls

The first show on today’s list of podcasts by Irish podcasters is called Talking Derry Girls. Derry is spelled D-E-R-R0Y not like milk and cheese, but the town Derry in Ireland,  The three hosts of the show are from the town of Derry. so their thoughts, opinions, and commentary about the Netflix show Derry Girls are rooted in real life experience.

If you love a conversational podcast, this is the podcast for you. Even if you haven’t watched Derry Girls, these friends are incredibly fun to listen to and delightful companions as you watch the show. I actually got to do an entire episode about this podcast. If you want more interesting behind the scenes info, make sure to listen to that episode.

Since the podcast follows along with the Derry girls, I recommend starting with the first episode. This way you don’t have any spoilers and you get to start the journey with the hosts. It is linked above.

Someone Like Me

Y’all know that I love kid podcasts so of course I found a fabulous Irish kid podcast to tell you about. It’s called Someone Like Me. It’s a podcast featuring kids from Ireland who have something unique that they want to share with the world. In each episode, a different child meets and interviews a grown up that’s a bit like them. This podcast is so sweet.

My six year old came over and asked me what I was listening to while I was doing the research for this episode and listening to it. He was intrigued by the premise. He stuck around to hear the rest of the episode, which is a glowing endorsement from him. This podcast is a short series with only 9 episodes, and each of them is only about 10 minutes long. It won’t take you too long to listen to all of them.

I highly recommend listening to the one titled Down Syndrome. This is the one my son and I listened to. The episode is well produced and helps kids, and their grown ups, learn more about Down Syndrome in a way that is positive and informative. In the episode, 12 year old Alex has Down syndrome and is matched with Paul Curran, a bronze medal winner from the Special Olympics. They have a lovely conversation about many different aspects of both of their lives, including having Down syndrome.

The Northern Bank Job

The next podcast on today’s list of Irish podcasts is The Northern Bank Job. It tells the story of the biggest bank heist in British and Irish criminal history. This podcast is very well produced and super intriguing. The storytelling is top notch and had me on the edge of my seat with many different voices being used to tell the story, which adds a wonderful depth to the show.

I haven’t finished this series yet, but you better believe I will be. I’m not usually a true crime podcast listener, but that’s mostly because I can’t handle murder or creepy situations. Since this is a story about a bank heist, it wasn’t scary for me, just super interesting. This podcast is also a short series, so I recommend starting on the first episode so you aren’t confused about what’s going on. I promise that the first episode will hook you and you won’t be able to stop listening.

Podcast Checklist

Starting a podcast can feel super overwhelming and Googling how to start a podcast usually adds to that overwhelm. That’s why I created a comprehensive list of all the things you need to create a successful podcast.

It includes the things you think about when starting a podcast like a microphone and audio editing software, but it also includes things that you hadn’t thought of like your show’s Purple Cow or your podcast release schedule.  Use this list to know exactly what you need to create your successful podcast.

Grab the list by clicking the link at the top of the blog.

Conversations on the Margins

The next show on today’s list of Irish podcasts is called Conversations on the Margins. This show brings you interesting and meaningful conversations and discussions about life, family, art, music, and more from inside the Irish prison system.

This is a podcast that you’ll want to listen to at normal speed or even slowed down a little bit. The accents are a little hard to follow when you first start listening, but the stories are worth the effort. They are interesting and sometimes heartbreaking, but all very human and mostly hopeful.  This is another limited series show with nine full episodes.

I know I’ve said this a lot today, but I recommend starting with the first episode in this series as well. Starting at the beginning will help you get to know the people in the easiest way, and will ease you into getting used to the way the inmates speak.

 The Big Tech Show

The last Irish podcast on today’s list is called The Big Tech Show. As the name suggests, it’s a podcast all about the latest technology. You learn about all sorts of new technology from the host, Adrian Weckler. Adrian is the tech editor of the news outlet, The Irish Independent. He brings on guest experts to have conversations with. These conversations are interesting for the most part with an Irish anecdote in most episodes.

If you’re looking for a place to start, a great episode would be the one that Adrian did with the technology editor from the London Independent, all about Neuralink, which is a brain chip. It was interesting and pretty fascinating to hear people from different countries talk about Elon Musk.
