My son is an animal lover. His favorite animal changes often, but there is always a place in his heart for marine animals. So when I found this podcast, I knew we had to listen to it. I also wanted to share it with other marine animal lovers who will enjoy the tales of ocean exploration. It’s called Dive in with NOAA Fisheries. That’s NOAA as in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Learn about Ocean Exploration
John Sheehan and the NOAA Fisheries team described the show like this. “NOAA Fisheries conducts world class science to support sustainable marine life and habitats. We manage millions of square miles of ocean, almost 100,000 miles of coastline. We support a 244 billion fishing industry, and protect and rebuild endangered marine species and habitats. It’s a huge job. Our podcast is about the work we do and the people behind it.” The length of each episode is around 20 minutes.

Q&A With the Host
1. Why do you make your podcast?
Dive In with NOAA Fisheries highlights the hard work and sound science conducted in support of the stewardship of our nation’s resources and their habitat. It’s a show about fish, marine mammals, habitat conservation, seafood, working waterfronts, and the many communities that rely on our ocean’s resources.
2. What would you consider the “vibe” or feeling of your podcast?
The vibe is informative but casual. I’m genuinely curious about the work of our scientists and officials. I hope that that curiosity is contagious for our listeners.
3. What do you want people to get out of your podcast?
I would love our listeners to get a better sense of how their federal government works, and what is getting accomplished, despite maybe not always being frontpage news.
4. What is your favorite episode of your podcast? Why?
I don’t really have a favorite episode, but there are many, many bits and pieces that I’ve loved throughout the run of the show so far. The show began with a series of episodes looking at each of the regional science centers around the country, and the way they conduct scientific surveys. It opened my eyes to both the biodiversity and the vastness of our country, and just how big a job it is to be responsible for millions of square miles of ocean, and all the resources and habitat that entails.
5. Is your podcast ok for little ears?
Yes! Though, I wouldn’t say it’s created with little ears in mind – I would happily let my 8 and 9 year old children listen, but they would probably roll their eyes.
6. Where can people find you?
We’re on most podcast platforms (those that we’re allowed to use, by federal regulation) and always at: http://fisheries.noaa.
